London, Chatto & Windus, 1891 [1890]. First edition, first impression. Hardback. A good book. Three volumes, complete. Inscribed by the author's wife to volume one. With an als from the same laid in. Quite an uncommon book, preceding the single volume issue of 1891, but itself preceded by the parts issue and perhaps the US issue. There's speculation that Arnold's writing may have influenced Burroughs' Barsoom books, particularly his Gullivar Jones. Though others speculate that Carter is more akin to Phra. A reincarnation fantasy [Clute, EoSF, p52]. All volumes have some wear, bumping and markings, and a reading lean. Volume one has abrasion to the front pastedown, probably a plate removal, unlikely to be a public library. Volumes two and three have an endpaper, whever volume one doesn't. There's a seller's note to that effect, but also mentioning 'lacks front on volume 2' though I can't see anything missing there. Illustrations by H.M. Paget [10884, Hyraxia Books].
