London, Sampson Low, Marston, Searle, & Rivington, 1880. First edition, first impression. Hardback. A very good copy. Complete in two volumes. Collects 42 short stories, some crime, some weird and some ghost stories. Currey notes a catalogue to the rear of his copy dated April 1880, his copy is in grey cloth, Locke notes the same in Spectrum (vI p82). Nothing to suggest this is anything other than another issue or state of the same. Condition: some discolouration to the boards, with a little bumping and edge wear. Spine tips worn. Soem gatherings a little shaken. From Spectrum: "Volume One: 'The Riddle of the Ring' (mystery and crime); 'In the Dusk at Dusseldorf' (rationalised supernatural); 'The Secret of the White Chest' (mystery story); 'The Gipsy Model' (crime and vengeance); "The Shadow of a Dream' (supernatural story of a man who dreams of a violent event in his future; also to some extent a detective story); 'Fair May of Mayfair' (mystery story); 'A Terrible Confession' (crime and shipwreck); 'Her Holiday'; 'The Lady in the Blue Barouche'; 'A Midnight Watch'; 'Faithful to the Last' and 'River and Down' (crime, mystery and a touch of detection). Volume Two: 'The Ghost of a Chance' (supernatural story); 'A Story of Christmas Firelight'(mystery story; hidden panels, etc); Valentine's Vigil' (story of fraud); 'At the Sign of the Black Adder' (where the hero was robbed); 'The End of a Dream' (in a drugged sleep the hero sees his true love struggling with the villain; after he awakes, the dream comes true and he rescues her); 'Dorothy's Fortune'; 'The Weird Wood- land' (crime story; atmospheric but not supernatural); 'A Fearful Fog'; 'A Terrible Journey'; 'The Steel Mirror' (story of the supernatural); "The Old Mill on the Marsh'; 'A Day on Dartmoor and a Night'; 'Rifle and Brush' (military story)."
