London, Henry Colburn, 1828. First Edition. First Impression. Hardback. A very good copy. A somewhat obscure collection of tales from the 12th to the 18th century mostly set in and around London. The collection includes The Wehr Wolf: A Legend of the Limosin, an early werewolf tale, preceding Reynolds' Wagner the Wehr-Wolf, and a number of others in the speculative vein, and an early example of an armchair detective. All wrapped and presented with an excellent framing narrative. Seemingly the first issue, with 'Legends of London' absent on the title pages. In the original marbled boards with cloth spines. Loss to the spine labels, toning to the cloth and rubbing to the boards. Spine tips and corners worn. Collector's plates to the front pastedowns. Foxing to the endpapers. A few seller's notes in pencil to the front of volume one. [11581, Hyraxia Books].
