London, F. V. White & Co., 1903. First Edition. Hardback. A good copy. Signed on the half title page by Geroge Griffith. This is a heavily annotated copy, corrected by the author for publication for a subsequent issue. Black ink and pencil markings, writing and strikeout marks throughout the block. Some page edges are chipped and creased. Finger marks in the ink on title page. Spine lean. Bumped edges. Spine faded and title written on the spine by hand in black ink. The last page has been removed roughly. George Griffith (1857-1906) was one of the leading voices in contemporary science fiction / scientific romance, particularly in the future war subgenre. He first found success with The Angel of the Revolution which was the most popular work of science fiction at the time until the Time Machine toppled it. Largely forgotten nowadays, as his work doesn't always stand up to modern military advancements, he was however one of the first English writers to make a full-time living from science fiction. [11765, Hyraxia Books].
