London, Jarrolds, 1952. First edition, first impression. Hardback. A very good copy. An excellent copy, presented with a letter from Dunsany and a sketch on the endpaper from Biro, who has also signed the jacket flap. The letter is dated 1946 and addressed to a Mr Neville. Neville must've questioned the 'adulteration' of salt with bone dust, as it is on this subject that Dunsany amusingly replies. A little wear and rubbing to the jacket edges and spine tips, some bumping also. Edges foxed, but a nice copy overall. Lord Dunsany (1878-1957) was a prolific writer and one of the architects of what has now cemented itself as the fantasy genre. His work, along with Eddison, Macdonald and Morris, was key in creating the channels from folklore and mythology to entirely synthetic secondary worlds. Cover art by Val Biro [11812, Hyraxia Books].
