The first volume includes many supernatural stories, sketches and extracts from other works and, according to the preface, serves as "the scaffolding, as it were, to the building that we openly display in our second volume", which is basically an account of fire-worship and of the Rosicrucians" [Locke, Spectrum III: p46].
