London, Richard Bentley, 1837. First edition, first impression. Hardback. A very good copy. A utopian feminist Gothic novel set in Australia. "Lost race: A civilisation of 3-4 millions people of European, mainly English, origin in a fertile environment in Australia, descended from early colonists and out of contact with the world for 300 years." [Locke, Spectrum II: 47] Original paper-covered boards. Some rubbing to the edges and a little toning and wear to the label. Some bumping and offsetting. The edges and the first and last few leaves are foxed. Mary Fox (1798-1864) was the illegitimate daughter of King William IV. Annotation from Sargeant "A reformed social and political system set in a eutopia founded by Europeans in the interior of Australia, where one of the eleven states of a federal union is called Eutopia, defined as a fine place. Fairly conservative. Constant reference to not being like the savages, but local Aborigines have been educated, and there has been some blending of the two groups. There are both personal and property votes. Must have basic education to vote and get additional votes for public service and personal qualifications, with three extra votes for intelligence. Religious toleration." [11864, Hyraxia Books].
