London, Chapman & Hall, 1855. First edition, first impression. Hardback. A very good copy. Signed by the author on the title page. Additionally signed by Walter Whiting, Sydney's brother, with a lengthy inscription presenting the book from the author to Sir David Brewster, to whom the book is dedicated. "[The] protagonist, conveniently vaporized by in the summer heat, ventures on a Fantastic Voyage to the surface and interior of the Sun, which is cool enough to live on, and is inhabited by a race so refined and sublimated that the Utopia its inhabitants have built seems paradisal; sadly, he is forced to return to Earth." [SFE, Clute]. Some wear and staining to the cloth, a little lean to the spine, some bumping to the spine tips and corners. Walter Whiting's signature is to a slip pasted to the front pastedown, the same size as the pastedown. A little looseness to the binding. A couple of marks to the leaves, small seller's sticker.
