London, Robert Holden & Co, 1928. Hardback first edition in this format (originally published in 1794). The book is near fine with Oswald Train's book plate to the front pastedown and the ownership inscription of a William La Page Finley to the front free endpaper. Some chipping to the spine and wear to the edges of the spine, with the webbing showing through in a couple of places. From the Horrid Novels series with a wonderful Paul Rotha cover. Introduced by Montague Summers. Ludwig Flammenberg was a pseudonym for Carl Friedrich Kahlert. The first edition was such a scarce book that it was commonly thought to be fabricated by Jane Austen when she criticised it in Northanger Abbey; if only they'd had the Internet back then!
