London, Spottiswoode & Co. / Chatto & Windus, 1892. Proof. Chatto and Windus recorded as the publishers of the book, but the book contains a number of stamps bearing Spottiswoode & Co. Case bound in cloth. 3pp TLS with autograph amendments from Besant tipped in, with a second single page ALS tipped in also. A handful of short amendments to the text, similarly, a number of printers stamps. Condition wise, it's got a number of faults: the binding is tired, with some rubbing, bumping and fading; pulling at the front hinge showing through to the webbing, front endpaper with seller's noted outlining the stamps, amendments etc. An ex-libris plate and a separate ex-libris inscription, no title page etc. (not clear if that's as issued). First page has a hole in it around 2cm x 2cm, some leaves with creasing and short tears, but not too bad; some spotting to the endpapers. Generally worn, but it's likely been used extensively in the early days
