New York, Harper & Brothers, 1888. First Edition. First Impression. A fine copy of an important work of fantasy. The first edition in book form. A highlight of speculative fiction, albeit published a little later than it should've been and losing a lot of its charm to other titles, such as She by H. Rider Haggard. Some trivial wear to the spine tips. Stamp of Nordrach Ranch (a Colorado Sanitarium from the early 19th C) to front pastedown. Contemporary letter laid-in, with a fragment of a review of the Chatto and Windus edition pasted to it. The letter is a little tricky to read, and we can see no relation to the book. Cover art / illustrations by Gilbert Gaul [5731, Hyraxia Books].
