Liverpool, Haunted Library, 1979-1993. First Edition. First Impression. Sixteen issues, covering the first sixteen issues. The first issue titled Ghosts & Scholars, the second titled More Ghosts & Scholars and then numbered thereafter. All near fine. The Ghosts and Scholars series was published to celebrate and research the work of M.R. James. The magazines are well produced, with articles and fiction by a number of well known writers including Mike Ashley, the late Richard Dalby, A.F. Kidd, Ron Weighell, Hugh Lamb, David Rowlands, and of course M.R. James. Artwork was also a prominent feature of the magazines, with pieces from Alan Hunter, Stephen Jones, Jim Pitts, Allen Koszowski and Dallas Goffin. The booklets give a remarkable insight into the landscape of M.R. James and beyond, with writings by Le Fanu, Ingulphus and many others. Of course, the earliest issues are the hardest to find and many of the titles are infrequently on the market. This isn't the full compliment, there were a further 17 issues, the final issue being number 33 from 2001. In 2002 the magazine was succeeded by a newsletter. An important collection in the study of M.R. James, and for the more casual collector it represents an excellent resource for fiction and essays. Illustrations by Stephen Jones, Jim Pitts etc. [5912, Hyraxia Books].
