New York, Alfred A. Knopf, 1943. First Edition. First Impression. Hardback. A very good copy. A signed copy of a significant work of science fiction. Published the previous year in three parts in Black Mask. Adapted for cinema three times, and also for Orson Welles' radio dramatisation (of War of the Worlds fame). An over-powered brain in a vat, not much more that needs to be added to that synopsis. A somewhat popular trope. The book itself is signed by the author to the title page without inscription [Bleiler, p180: Paranormal abilities and biological SF: Pringle, p91]. Jacket has a little bumping and wear to the spine tips, and some tape ghosting to the flaps and rear plate. Some more ghosting to jacket reverse. Spine tips bumped to the boards. Cover art by W. Deffaa [7826, Hyraxia Books].
