London, Methuen, 1903. First Edition. First Impression. Hardback. A very good copy. A wonderful association copy, presented by the author to her first son, Paul Bland. The inscription reads thus: "To Paul Bland, from his mother E. Nesbit Bland, Oct 11, 1903." Nesbit had a unfortunate marriage to Hubert Bland, though three children were borne of it. Paul (1880-1940) was the first. He committed suicide another thirty years later, after a depression, thought in part to come from the fractured homelife and his father. Nesbit's most famous work, The Railway Children, was dedicated to Paul. The book itself is in very good shape, with some foxing to the early leaves. A little toning, soiling and bumping, but nothing more than to be expected. Overall a presentable copy with a wonderful and important association. The book itself is a collection of short stories.
