London, Chatto & Windus, 1891 [1890]. First edition, first impression. Hardback. A good book. Three volumes, complete. Signed by way of a clipped piece of card to the end of the introduction. Quite an uncommon book, preceding the single volume issue of 1891, but itself preceded by the parts issue and perhaps the US issue. There's speculation that Arnold's writing may have influenced Burroughs' Barsoom books, particularly his Gullivar Jones. Though others speculate that Carter is more akin to Phra. A reincarnation fantasy [Clute, EoSF, p52]. All volumes have some wear, most notably to volume three where the cloth has split about 60% of the length up the fold. Otherwise, fairly nice shape. Each endpaper has tape ghosting. Each a little shaken. Some short tears to the cloth and rubbing / soiling. Illustrations by H.M. Paget [9217, Hyraxia Books].
