London, E.J. Francis & Co., 1879. First edition, first impression. Paperback. A very good copy. A collection of 25 short ballads by Sims, mostly previously published in The Referee. A fun little collection, separated into the Dagonet Ballads and then just Miscellaneous. Dagonet was Sims' pseudonym. Perhaps the most important ballad in this collection, and indeed in Sims' oeuvre is the second piece In The Workhouse: Christmas Day, which, on its 1877 publication two years earlier in The Referee, prompted further discussion of working conditions. An important piece, represented here for the first time in bookform. In very good condition, with just a few stains to the wraps and endpapers. The pic shows a plastic wrapper, this is just protective and removable, but nicely applied so I left it on for photography. [9567, Hyraxia Books].
